Racing Cadets

Cadets sail every Tuesday after Easter (dates vary slightly each year) until late September for sessions on the water. We meet at Oreston Quay Slipway from 5.00pm and finish at approximately 8.00pm.

During the winter months we run a shore-based programme from 1730 - 1830 and operate on a fortnightly basis. The winter programme consists of those essential theory units which would otherwise interrupt the on-water sessions plus numerous fun activities.

What does the club provide?

We can provide buoyancy aids and helmets (optional), club boats and of course qualified, friendly instruction, for complete beginners through to trapezing and spinnaker techniques. Being affiliated to the RYA and a Recognised Training Establishment, instruction is based on their schemes meaning a full range of their dinghy certificates can be awarded.

Interested in racing?

In partnership with Hooe Point Sailing Club a full racing calendar is available. Cadets have the use of a range of dinghies from Picos through to the RS Fevas, Laser and Laser IIs. If you already have your own dinghy, you can race that. There will even be chances to sail or race on a yacht when you are older. It’s all part of the Plym Yacht Club Cadet experience!

Social side

Our Cadets have lots of fun and make many new friends. Both the summer and winter programmes include events and social activities such as the ‘BBQ evening’ on Batten Beach, or fish and chips in the Barbican.

What about...

Clothing?

Water and wind make for a cool environment. Wear warm clothing with a windproof jacket and training shoes (feet will get wet!); if you have one, a wetsuit would be ideal. Don’t forget a change of clothing for when you finish; full changing facilities with hot showers are available at the club.

Qualifications?

We can take anyone from 8 up to 18 years of age. You must be able to swim 50m or be water confident! We provide fully qualified, experienced instructors.

Safety?

The club takes your safety seriously! We always have safety support craft on the water before the cadets launch, with radio contact both between the safety craft and the shore.
