Flag size

The size of an Ensign is usually stated in yards, defying most modern conventions. A guide for an Ensign used to be an inch per foot of yacht length, but in modern yachts this maybe a little on the small size. Ensigns are usually measured on the diagonal which is helpful if you want a classic look where the tip of a transom mounted Ensign just touches the water in still air – measured from the top of the flagpole to the just above the water surface.

Other flags, such as Club Burgees, private signals and overseas courtesy flags should be approximately ½ inch for each foot of the highest mast above the water. For example, on a 30ft boat, with 46ft between masthead and water, the burgee should be about 23 inches in the fly (round up to next size available as they always look too small).

The vertical measurement of a flag is called the “hoist” and its length “the fly”. If only one measurement is given it will be “the fly”. The PYC Burgees are Woven Polyester stitched/sewn. The sizing chart below should be used as a starting guide only. Choose a size that looks right!
