PYC 2018 Yacht Haven Friday Evening Series 1 Race 6 25th May 2018
Summer seems to have suddenly arrived with sunny days and gentle breezes since the last Bank Holiday Weekend. The very gentle breeze was coming from the South West but varying between 2 or 3 knots, up to a maximum of 7 but at times reducing to a flat calm.We only had 11 boats coming out as several crews were away over the weekend but those that came out were faced with a taxing race on a beautiful evening but wishing for more wind.
Race Officer Paddy O’Connor set them all a simple course beating out to New Ground Buoy before cruising over to F Buoy, hopefully with enough wind to fill spinnakers, then running down to South Mallard with the finish of the round at West Mallard. A shorter second lap would take them across the Sound to Melampus then across to Dunstone Rock then home through the Mallards as before. That was the hoped for plan but unfortunately with what breeze there was at the start gradually dying away as the evening progressed. One round was all that could be managed and even that defeated a couple of boats that decided to retire.
A very trying evening for the line crew and Race Officer as well as the sailors but one that couldn’t be helped in such conditions. We can only hope for more wind next week, especially as we have the races to Fowey and back over the Bank Holiday Weekend.
